The MGTD/TF in America

Neighborhoods such as Fishtown, East Passyunk, and Queen Village continued to sizzle, and the western end of Walnut Street, spanning the Schuylkill to University City, suddenly came alive. But , more than ever, was not entirely about new Center City restaurants. I ate the exotic loaves at Georgian Bread in the Northeast, a vast yet underappreciated slice of Philly where I also found 60 other recommendations. A few standbys gained a bell over previous rankings, and some newcomers landed among my favorites regardless of geography, including my restaurant of the year: Hearthside in Collingswood, from two young veterans of Vernick. This Year in Bells is a chance to revisit the highlights of all the restaurants reviewed on Sundays and those that had a rating change in the Ultimate Dining guide. But the good news is that one restaurant did help its case: Ambra improved to elite three-bell status, with a more confident and inventive Italian experience. In a year of nostalgia trips and road trips, that sense of an entire region getting more delicious by the day was one I want to remember. My only complaint was the soundtrack:

The market for sports cars in the United States at the time was actually increasing so it was not the lack of buyers or interest that caused the sales to decline. It just needed a car that was more appropriate for the era to compete. Many times they were racing focused but they could also be purely social or sporting, supporting such events as car shows and rallies. Another popular activity was organized hill climbs where members would compete with their cars to see who can climb a hill the fastest.

In some of these events the cars actually climbed the hill backwards. Below are a few of the most important and influential organizations of the period.

But the city’s water department sees it as a potentially high-level hazard, requiring a permit and annual inspections that can be a big surprise, especially to homeowners who are inheriting an irrigation system along with a new house. As gardeners get their systems turned back on for spring, here are some things they need to know about staying within the law and maintaining a healthy water supply to their homes — and their neighbors’.

What does the city government require for operation of a sprinkler system? A permit must be obtained for the system when it is installed. At that point, the city has a record of the sprinkler system. Then, every year, the backflow preventer on the system must be checked by a registered inspector who reports the inspection to the city. Every five years, along with the inspection, the backflow valve must be rebuilt, because its parts start to deteriorate. If a backflow preventer is not installed or isn’t working properly and there is a loss of water pressure, anything that is in the pipes and anything that is pooled around a sprinkler head — including bacteria-infested soil and pesticides — can be sucked backward into the water supply.

It’s similar to drinking out of a straw: As long as you’re sucking on the straw applying pressure , the liquid goes into your mouth. When you let up on the pressure — stop sucking — the liquid goes backward into the cup. The contaminants can travel farther than the house that has the sprinkler system — they can affect neighboring houses as well.

Among common causes of a loss in water pressure are waterline breaks and fire. How many people comply with the backflow inspections?

History[ edit ] Philadelphia to Camden[ edit ] The modern-day PATCO Speedline follows the route of several historical mainline railroad lines, some dating back to the 19th century. These railroads all terminated in Camden, where passengers could catch ferries across the Delaware River to Philadelphia. Early in the 20th century, the idea of a fixed Delaware River crossing connecting Camden and Philadelphia gained traction, and in , the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey formed the Delaware River Bridge Joint Commission to build a bridge between the two cities.

Construction of the rail line did not actually begin until , and the Bridge Line opened on June 7, Relatively short, it only had four stations: In Philadelphia, the line used a tunnel built in to serve both Ben Franklin Bridge trains and a Broad Street Subway spur designed to serve 8th and Market and the southern part of the city center via Locust Street. The tunnel, which replaced an earlier proposal for a downtown subway loop, extended under 8th to Locust, then under Locust to 16th, but as tracks were not laid beyond 8th and Market, the first Bridge Line trains did not run beyond 8th Street into the Locust Street Subway until February 10, The agency commissioned Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Hall and MacDonald now Parsons Brinckerhoff to study possible rapid transit services for South Jersey; Parsons, Brinckerhoff’s final report recommended building a new tunnel under the Delaware and three lines in New Jersey.
