Tuesday, 15 January J. Silver Plate Salver We have had for a while a nice salver which until recently we knew little about and was a bit of a conundrum. The salver has a brassy patina to it but in the centre of the base it bears a makers mark J. The brassy patina suggests that the piece has once been silver plated and unfortunatly due to the wrong type of cleaning the silver has worn off. Many plated items of this period have ended up being rubbed back to the base metal which makes complete silver plated items more scarce. Researching the makers’ mark brought with it some interesting information. This version of the mark was used between and and the mark next to it represents a beaver which was also used as a trade mark by this company.

Etymology[ edit ] The word cutler derives from the Middle English word ‘cuteler’ and this in turn derives from Old French ‘coutelier’ which comes from ‘coutel’; meaning knife modern French: The first documented use of the term “cutler” in Sheffield appeared in a tax return. A Sheffield knife was listed in the King’s possession in the Tower of London fifty years later. Several knives dating from the 14th century are on display at the Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield.

Man dating seeking relationship friendship Rated 4. The ability to talk about anything with her was refreshing and engaging. In fact, when I first met her, I didn’t know I was attracted to an ‘older’ woman. We are both hard-working with many hobbies in common. Recently, this woman underwent major surgery and it was her ex-boyfriend Fred, not the woman’s current older boyfriend, who was by her side.
Gretchen, now 44, was involved with a man of 51 and he was simply too busy with work and personal commitments to be available when she really needed him. I mean, older women think differently on certain issues and they’ve got more experience. Not that I was doing it for her, but just being with her. There have been nothing but positives in my relationships with two older women. They were able to see things in me that I could not see in myself. Pat offered me space, devotion and herself, which I couldn’t find in anyone else.
She is a best friend who reflects back to me what a good person I am, which builds my confidence and self-esteem.

There are three major categories of collectible silver; namely: Always look for a maker’s mark hallmark on old silver; these marks can be found in the form of a hallmark usually indicating English or Continental origin or a maker’ s or company name. During the 19th c. Continental silver of all periods is usually much more elaborate in design than its English counterparts; American silver was also relatively plain up until the Victorian era 19th c When shopping for silver, always be aware that many items were made in “pairs” i.
Since around , Britain has had a clear and consistent system of marking silver. British silver will have the following stamps: When the word “sterling” is found on a piece of silver, this indicates that it is American silver after around or, Irish 18th c. Most European countries had a system of hallmarks for silver which are too numerous to cover here; any good silver hallmark book will have a complete list of all European and British hallmarks.
The European silver standard can oftentimes be “better than sterling” in its silver content, that is it may be more highly alloyed such as or English and Continental hallmarks can be located on the bottoms of vessels, on edges foot rings , inside of candle sockets, or on the body i. European marks are often times hidden among the elaborate designs on the piece not so with British hallmarks. Look in every “nook and cranny” for those marks before you decide it is unmarked!
Early American silver sterling is very rare; silver that is most easily found today dates after the Civil War. Early American silver was usually marked with only the marker’s name or initials i.

How to Identify Reed & Barton Silverplate
Frequently one finds that sellers guess-timate the age of a piece to show the item in its most favorable light. Weekend collectors–in a post-brunch glow and accompanied by a charming companion–are all too ready to hear the best of an object that has attracted their attention. As we say on the Street:
This is a pretty turn of the Century French etched glass cologne bottle, the slightly panelled moulded glass body etched to the front with a flower garland.
The mark is a general European standard – very common in the Germanic countries – for the lowest with a few rare exceptions acceptable silver purity. This is by no means a slur upon the spoon; many fine and valuable examples are. It does indicate a middle to late 19th century vintage at best, however. That said, you would be best served by judging the quality of the design and its condition. Any spoon ‘quite worn’ has lost much of its value; I have a pair of Dutch spoons of the late 17th century that I didn’t hesitate to spend several hundred on; I also have a nearly identical example of the same vintage, but worn nearly smooth, that I spent – appropriately – McDonald’s lunch money for.
Assaying William Erik Voss It is impractical for a refiner to refine each individual shipment of scrap separately. To keep the operation efficient, a sample is taken of each refining shipment to determine its precious metal content. Drilling samples are taken from each end of the bullion. The assay laboratory does a miniature refining process on the two samples to determine the precious content. The bullion karat is actually determined by the percentage of fine gold left following the assaying process.
For example, milligram samples are taken.
